AVID Jazz presents three classic Phil Woods albums plus, including original liner notes on Volume Two of a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD.
“Four Alto’s”; “Phil Talks With Quill”; “Phil & Quill With Prestige” plus 11 of 12 tracks from “Phil Woods/Gene Quill Sextet-Phil And Quill”
Let’s quote from the original liner notes from “Phil & Quill With Prestige” to set up this fine (nearly!) four album set by top alto saxophonists Phil Woods accompanied by Gene Quill. “Phil Wells Woods and Daniel Eugene Quill met in New York in 1954 and played jam sessions together…….early in 1957 they teamed up at the Pad in Greenwich Village…….the two of them blew together in a group that pianist John Williams was heading at a weekend engagement……Quill on a borrowed alto……the two of them wailed wonderfully into the morning”. And from “Phil Woods/Gene Quill Sextet-Phil & Quill”…..we learn….”Of the two, Woods has possibly developed the most completely individual attack at this point-strong, assertive and gutsy swinging. But Quill, who burst from the cocoon a bit later than Woods, has recently been moving with startling and satisfying speed toward his own jazz fate. The idea of teaming up has been stewing in the two altoists minds for a couple of years…..they found that they felt comfortable in each other’s musical company and that more flexibility and variety were possible in the sound of two altos than in pairings of most other instruments”. “Four Alto’s”….a Big Sound! Phil Woods, Gene Quill, Hal Stein and veteran Sahib Shihab - all alto saxophonists, all immersed in the tradition of Charlie Parker, not copying but carrying on the tradition (can you see a Parker composition on this set)!!?? These giant alto men are joined by Mal Waldron on piano, Terry Potter on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. “Phil Talks With Quill”- Here Phil’s regular rhythm section, Bob Corwin on piano, Sonny Dallas on bass and Nick Stabulas on drums are joined again by another regular collaborator, fellow alto sax man Gene Quill. “Phil & Quill With Prestige”- it’s that alto team again! Quill joins Phil alongside George Syran on piano, Teddy Kotick on bass and Nick Stabulas, again at the drum stool, for a set of 6 Woods originals! “The Phil Woods and Gene Quill Sextet-Phil And Quill” - The “A” team here accompanied by Sol Schlinger, giving bottom to the two altos on baritone sax, Dave McKenna on piano, Buddy Jones on bass and Shadow Wilson on drums.
