Franz Liszt proved a decisive influence on French composer Camille Sant-Saëns, who was the first to adopt the genre of the Lisztian symphonic poem. From Veni Creator (dedicated to ‘l’abbé Liszt’) through various tributes to Bach (Preludes and Fugues) to the brilliant Dies Iræ, Saint-Saëns’s organ music – in its own way – mirrors Liszt’s contradictions, torn between the secular (salon virtuosity) and the sacred (mysticism).
